Sons of Silverton: Cincinnati Hip-Hop's Dynamic Duo Taking the World by Storm

Sons of Silverton is more than just a name, it’s a declaration of pride and authenticity, a musical embodiment of Silverton, Ohio, and the artists who call it home. At the heart of their sound lies a deep connection to the place and its rich cultural history, much like how Brooklyn’s iconic status permeates the music of countless artists.

The duo behind Sons of Silverton, emcees KyleDavid and Citoak have long been influential figures in Cincinnati’s hip-hop scene. Their musical careers trace back decades with acts like The Five Deez and The Watusi Tribe. But despite their individual success, their collaboration as Sons of Silverton came about more recently, with KyleDavid rapping on a solo single by Citoak. It was in the process of creating that track that the duo realized something special was emerging. "In the process of doing that, Sons of Silverton just worked its way in," Citoak explained. "It felt right."

For KyleDavid, their collaboration was a natural progression. “We all have varied histories,” he said. “It just made sense for us to come together.” And come together they did, delivering their debut album, Or Forever Hold Your Peace, in 2017. Their latest album, GodGotUs, which dropped in 2021, marks a new chapter for the duo, solidifying their sound and message.

The title track, “GodGotUs”, offers an anthem of resilience and perseverance. The powerful, chanting chorus creates an electrifying energy that pushes listeners to keep moving forward. "You continue moving forward and keep driving, and eventually things will work out in your favor," KyleDavid says about the song’s essence. This track isn’t just a motivational anthem, it’s also a tribute to Cincinnati’s hip-hop legacy, dropping references to historic venues like Ripley’s and Sudsy’s.

The accompanying music video for “GodGotUs” was filmed at The Lodge KY, the same venue where Sons of Silverton performed for their WCPO Lounge Acts session. The video features a giant cutout of Ohio, symbolizing the duo’s pride in their roots. “Ohio is a hidden gem,” says KyleDavid. “We want to take the responsibility and onus of representing not only Silverton but Cincinnati and Ohio, and show the world there’s some talented, dope hip artists from this area.”

Sons of Silverton’s WCPO Lounge Acts performance features a diverse setlist showcasing tracks from both albums. Here’s a rundown of their set:
